How to Repair a Pothole with UNIQUE’s UPM® Cold Mix
Repairing a Pothole with UPM® Cold Mix is a Simple 3-Step Process
There is a reason why over 18 million potholes a year are filled with UPM® Cold Mix Asphalt Repair. Unlike other pothole repair products, which are rigid and inflexible, UPM® mix is engineered to naturally adhere itself to the walls and base of the pothole.
The secret is in UPM® Cold Mix’s slow curing nature. As soon as the asphalt has been compacted, the surface of the pothole patch will cure to the hardness of the surrounding pavement. However, everything below the surface cures at a much slower rate. This slow curing process allows the patch to move as the pavement surrounding it naturally expands and contracts.
Best of all, repairing a pothole with UPM® cold mix is a simple 3-step process. Here’s how:
Step One: Remove All Loose Debris
Wet or dry, UPM® Cold Mix works in all weather conditions. However, first you will want to remove any loose material or debris from the pothole and surrounding area. While it isn’t necessary to rid the area of every last bit of dirt and dust, the area does need to be cleared of all large objects and loose pavement.
Step Two: Pour UPM® Cold Mix Into the Pothole.
Take note, for holes deeper than two inches, UPM® cold mix should be applied in two inch layers. Each two-inch layer then needs to be compacted using a tamper or shovel before applying any additional layers.
Step Three: Compacting the Crown
Due to the normal wear and tear of traffic conditions, settling and compaction will naturally occur. To account for this compaction, the crown of the UPM® cold mix should be leveled off at a height 25% higher than the total depth of the pothole. Then using a using a shovel or tamper, the pothole mix will need to be thoroughly compacted.
It really is that easy. After the pothole has been filled and thoroughly compacted, the repair will now be stable enough for immediate traffic.
