RS-90
SEALER / BINDER FOR ASPHALT PAVEMENTS
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
RS-90 is a professional grade product developed to meet today's demands for a penetrating sealer/binder for existing asphalt pavements. RS-90 was engineered to penetrate the pavement surface and rejuvenate the surface by replacing the oils and binders that the sun and weather bake out of the pavement through time. These oils and binders are necessary to keep your asphalt pavement in good repair by binding the surface together. RS-90 keeps the pavement flexible thus preventing the surface from deteriorating and becoming brittle, which allows the pavement to crack thereby allowing water to enter and soften the base course which results in pavement breakup and costly repairs.
RS-90 can be used on old asphalt, new asphalt, shoulders, curbs, chuckhole patches, and also as a tack coat. It may also be used to black out pavement markings, any asphalt markings, and in any asphalt maintenance program requiring superior sealing and binding characteristics at a low cost.
RS-90 is a liquefied bitumen consisting of select grade asphalt binders modified with Gilsonite ore and plasticizers blended with a fast-drying petroleum cutter stock. RS-90 contains antioxidants, adhesives and chemicals not present in highly refined crude oil base asphalts. Properly applied RS-90 seals out water to protect the base and eliminates water stripping. Seals in resins and oils necessary for pavement flexibility and adds antioxidants, binders, and a tough, durable surface to modern, highly refined asphalts. RS-90 formulations are designed to replace and preserve the chemicals beneficial to pavement life. As an integral part of the pavement mat, RS-90 adds many years of serviceable life to asphaltic concretes.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
RS-90 may be applied using a standard asphalt distributors and or hand held spray wands supplied by standard tack pots. The equipment must be in good working order with no contaminates or diluents in the tank prior to filling with RS-90. The application equipment must be capable of maintaining predetermined flow rates and constant pressure during application. Use of hand application equipment, i.e. squeegees, brooms, brushes, rollers, etc. can result in higher than recommended application rates exhibiting longer cure times. No special mixing equipment is required as RS-90 is ready to apply and will not separate in transit or storage.
APPLICATION RATES AND CURE TIME
The recommended application rate for the RS-90 on most surfaces is 0.10 to 0.12 gallons per square yard (approximately 80 to 90 square feet per gallon). However, the application rate may vary from 0.08 to 0.14 gallons per square yard depending on the porosity and the age of the pavement. Exceeding recommended application rates should not be done without first contacting a manufacturer's representative and or performing a spot test to determine proper application rate. Under normal conditions, cure time for RS-90 is 1 to 4 hours. Sheltered or shady areas may require longer cure times.
APPLICATION PRECAUTIONS
RS-90 should not be applied to wet or damp pavement surfaces. Do not apply during rainy or damp weather, or when rain is anticipated within four hours after application is completed. Pavement surface and ambient temperatures should be 50°F (10°C) and rising. Application in cool or humid conditions may result in moisture entrapment resulting in chalking. RS-90 may be applied at night provided the pavement surface temperatures and outside air temperatures are at least 70°F. Newly applied surfaces may exhibit slippery conditions when wet. DO NOT apply RS-90 over previously applied water based mineral filled coal tar or asphalt emulsion seal coats. DO NOT apply RS-90 over newly laid asphalt pavement. Newly laid asphalt pavement should be allowed to cure for 60 to 90 days before application of RS-90.
PREPARATION OF PAVEMENT SURFACES
Repair and patch all major pavement defects. Scrape all oil spots to remove excess oil and dirt. Just before applying RS-90, clean the asphalt surface of all dust, dirt, and other debris. All cracks, other than hairline cracks, should be filled with a suitable asphalt crack filler. This may be done before or after application of RS-90.
ADDITION OF OTHER MATERIALS
RS-90 has been chemically engineered to provide a restorative seal without the requirement of other materials or additives. DISSCO shall assume no responsibility for problems arising from the alteration of the original formula.
MAINTENANCE
Under normal wear and tear, a single application of RS-90 properly applied, should not require reapplication for up to three years. Reapplication should be at recommended rates. Regular preventative maintenance can extend the life of pavement significantly. CAUTION, during winter conditions DO NOT use chemically modified de-icers on RS-90 for damage to surface coating may result and/or slippery when wet conditions may result?
STORAGE & HANDLING
RS-90 is a clean non-filled oil-based asphalt cutback that is liquid at ambient temperature and may be stored outdoors in any steel non-agitated vessel. Pumping RS-90 may be achieved using any standard steel or iron fitted positive displacement gear pump. Piping should be constructed of threaded or welded steel pipe. RS-90 will not freeze. However, when ambient temperature is below 60°F, RS-90 should be stored indoors overnight or be heated to 80°F to 90°F for ease of application.
CLEAN UP
RS-90 may be removed from equipment with degreasing solvents. RS-90 should be removed from skin by using a waterless hand cleaner.
AVAILABILITY
RS-90 is sold ready to use form and is available in bulk and packaged in 5 gallon pails and 55 gallon drums.
